VIRTUAL RACE LOGISTICS – COVID STYLE

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Register here! Ultra Signup Page

WHEN –

Now that this race is 100% virtual the race is yours to own and smash your previous times. I will accept any race proof submitted in December as timing proof but it must be submitted by 11:59pm on 12/15 to be counted and included in possible top award prizes.

In 2021 we will leave the on course records from 2019 in good standing but we will have a virtual top times in case we ever suffer another pandemic for a virtual race.

COVID IMPACTS:

I wanted to let people know that it is with a (sad heart), I will not be able to make this a live event this year with COVID impacting the permits and services required to put on this race.  I REALLY, kicked it into overdrive trying to manage the obstacles and needs to make this live….but, the Phasing in Washington won’t allow this.  It was a special year of 15 running, hopefully the 16th Annual Pigtails will be live and in person with you all.

Please email me at aprilgraves22@gmail.com Should you have additional questions.

See FAQ below this section for more on each of these

  • ALL RACES WILL BE a “virtual only” race this year

  • Refund and Bib Transfer Information

  • Timing Submittal Requirements

  • Prize Drawings, Top winners of each race and Swag Information

PRICING: ALL PRICING HAS BEEN REDUCED

WHY?

I had initially set this race up without  COVID even on my radar.  As the months ticked by I had no idea that it would affect this race.  At the time I had projected budgets and I shared the cost projection on all races.  Since I am making the Half Marathon virtual.  It allows for a reduced cost to all.  There will be no more decreases in price if all events are made virtual.  Because the race has changed from one that any of us recognize and could entirely become virtual this year, I feel some discounts need to be established

Registration for half marathon will adjust to:

Registrations for the 50K and Marathon will adjust to: IF THIS RACE GOES VIRTUAL FOR ALL THE 50K and Marathon participants WILL receive special additional swag for paying in more and not being able to be live.

WHEN AND WHERE WILL I GET MY SWAG?

  • Virtual Runners will have the items mailed prior to the race date. Mailing packages to the address on your registration during the week of 11/15/2020. For those registering after this date your package may be a little past the 12/12 arrival date

_______________________________________________________

BUT, I DON’T WANT TO RUN A VIRTUAL RACE OR I CHANGED MY MIND!! WHAT DO I DO?

REFUNDS

MARATHON AND 50K RUNNERS REFUNDS

  • 90% of your total registration will be refunded under the condition of how you answer questions during checkout on UltraSignup.
  • These 90% refunds will be allowed for those runners that answer ‘NO’ to the question “Do you still want to participate in this race should it change to a virtual run?” This question will be asked to all 50K and Marathon runners during the checkout process. If the race is transferred to a 100% virtual event due to phasing guidelines those that answer “NO” will receive a refund and be removed from the registration list on 10/16/2020 so those on the waitlist have the ability to register.
  • If you change your mind prior to 10/15/2020 you can change your registration via UltraSignup to change the answer or email the director to do so for you
  • If you received a refund but want to run the virtual event after all, you will have to re-register.

Please do not ask me to change this policy

Yes, there is an exception to every rule, if you had your thumbs torn off in a thumb war, got stuck in Antarctica with no cell reception or something along these lines…. I might consider it.

My reasoning is not to be harsh, but fair to those that want to run – regardless of it being a virtual or live event.

HALF MARATHON REFUNDS

  • No refunds will be allowed – You signed up for a virtual race if you cannot run it you may choose a bib transfer.

TIMING

VIRTUAL RACE TIMING–

Virtual runners will be required to submit proof of time within 72 hours of the “start” time of 9am 12/12/2020 so it can be added to ultrasignup and top male / female winners can be determined.
These times will be posted within 96 hours of the event
The TOP 3 male and female runners each race category will also receive a ceramic piggy bank sent after times are submitted to celebrate their win.

HOW DO I SUBMIT MY TIME?

Since top prizes will be awarded all times you will need to be sent to the RD within 48 hours (by 5pm 12/14)  and there must be proof of timing with the results submitted.  If no timing and proof is sent in to the RD, you will be placed DNS on the race results website.

In order to submit your results, please complete the race distance in one run/walk.

You need to be able to submit your results photo. If you are completing your run or walk outdoors, many types of apps and watches/devices will record your distance and time.

Wait what about the prize money for top performers?

The prize money is one of the reasons I am requiring PROOF of time for ALL races.  This will ensure a completely honest win for a runner that is beating these past Top Performers.

The top 3 Female and Top 3 Male runners in each race distance will receive a ceramic piggy bank celebrating that win. These will be mailed after all results are tallied and posted.
Should Course Records be smashed – the money will be sent to the runner with their piggy bank after results have been tallied.

After 12/1/2020  you may change the name of the person running your race so they can submit their time.  Swag will be mailed to all virtual runners the week of 11/15 so you will need to get the swag to your transferred runner.

  • Live Event Runners Bib Transfers – If this race is allowed to proceed – live transfers will be allowed through 12/7/2020 via UltraSignup or an email to the RD.

About the RD: Although this is the first race I will be directing, I have run over 100 marathons, 100 half marathons, multiple 50K’s, relays and 5K’s, and I like to celebrate my birthday with 100-200 mile solo races.  Constructive feedback will be well received.  Unnecessary criticism will be forgotten.

RACE DAY – COURSE

Start the route in Maple Valley at Four Corners shopping area (by the Panera and Grocery Outlet). There is a lot of parking there and the trail is right there. The only drawback there is no bathroom unless the local businesses like McDonalds, Starbucks, etc will be open by that time. There’s a Safeway and Fred Meyer nearby. You would run out to the intersection where the Green to Cedar trail becomes the Cedar river trail and make that right turn that the 50kers do on their way back to the finish on my original course. For a half marathon, you turn around at the last bridge that crosses the Cedar River (it’s a big foot bridge) on the way to Landsburg and turn around. There is a road about half a mile before that for an aid station. Marathoners would do a double out and back. 50Kers can run all the way to the Landsburg parking (original start) and do that out and back twice for about 32 miles.

Trailhead and stay on the trail – The 13.1 and 26.2 will turn around at the big bridge by Big Bend National Park, the 26.2 will repeat this twice.  The 50K will go on the trail to the Old Start/Finish at Landsburg Park and will repeat this twice. There is a little more elevation for all races than prior years, but not much overall.

Total mileage marathon: 26.26mi

Total mileage 50K: 31.16mi

THIS COURSE IS USATF SANCTIONED

This run is on Cedar River Trail. The start and finish will be at Maple Valley Four Corners Shopping area – there is a trail entrance between MOD Pizza and the Church of Latter Day Saints.

COURSE MARKINGS

The course will be marked with spray paint and signs at intersections and turn-around.

The intent this year is to have more course markings!

BATHROOMS ALONG COURSE

There has always been one port o’ potty at the start/finish. Depending on need and registration numbers we will add a second one here and one on the course.

FOOD/AID

There are water/Hammer electrolyte drink along the course, you can refill your bottle (no cups on the course).

All runners should bring donations of 2-3 canned items 1 being chicken noodle soup and the other butternut squash soup. These will be at the finish line and manned aid stations.

MANNED AID STATION

In addition to the soup we will provide the regular race fare of chips, gummy candy, pop, cookies, mini candy bars, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, pickles, bananas, oranges.

Hammer nutrition will be providing ENDUROLYTES FIZZ® and  HAMMER GEL® for the manned stations – registrants will also receive these items in their bag at back pick-up.

Half Marathon runners will hit the manned aid station at 5.5, 7.75

Marathoners will hit the manned aid station at approx mileage 5.5, 7.75, 18.5, 20.5

50K runners will hit the manned aid station at approx mileage 5.5, 10.5, 21.5, 26

Manned Aid Station Trail crossing on residential street intersection SE 248th and 250th Ave SE

COURSE AND SAFETY ON IT

Try to do your best to be safe at all times and try not to put anyone else in an unsafe situation. Aid Station Volunteers will have cell phones to call for assistance or emergency evacuation from any point on the trail if needed.

UUNMANNED AID

There will be 1 unmanned aid station at the old Landsburg trail entrance turn around point for the 50k racers.

FINISH LINE FOOD

Soups (butternut squash and chicken noodle)- in addition to the soup we will provide the regular race fare of chips, gummy candy, pop, chocolate milk, cheese and ham quesadillas, candy, pickles, cookies,  bananas, oranges ….

Since this is a fat ass and the course finishes near a ton of yummy and warm places to eat the fare will not be over the top but there will be plenty of standard race fare and soup.

PARKING

PLEASE CARPOOL!The location will be updated for suggested parking

DROP BAGS

No drop bags. In past years, only a few people used them and it was always a hassle to get them back to the runner’s expectations. You can leave stuff at the first aid station and grab it on your way back. If you forget to pick it up again, you will just have to wait until the aid station closes and for the aid station workers to return to the start/finish to get it back.

SWAG

  • With the return of the Fat Ass race there will be left over swag while it lasts at packet pickup. Hats will sell for $10 each/.
  • Other than that all runners will receive a race medal and a Pigtails patch for you to place wherever you want.
  • Extra patches will be available at $1 each but only available at the finish line if they are available.
  • NO MAILING OF SWAG NOT PICKED UP ON RACE DAY!

VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers are needed!

8-9 volunteers are wanted for help at the manned aid station, timing table, check in and finish line food prep.

Volunteers will receive a special swag item – I’m still contemplating the volunteer swag, it will most likely be an embroidered sweatshirt with race patches and year

PHOTOS

There will be no photographer this year to keep costs down. We will gladly take your photo at the finish for you and we encourage you to share photos of your run with us if you take them on the course.

CURRENT COURSE RECORDS

The top 3 Female and Top 3 Male runners in each race distance will receive a ceramic piggy bank celebrating that win.

Upholding the longstanding tradition of record breaking cash prizes – The Marathon and The 50K will continue to receive $31.10 and $26.20 in cash for a record breaking time of the distance they registered for. If you dropped, you do not qualify for cash prizes. You will still have the fame in future race websites and on ultra signup. See below for more information on records and dropping distances.

Marathon:

Female: Marlene Farrell 3:02:10 (2012)

Male: Uli Steidl 2:31:26 (2012)

50K:

Female: Gina Slaby 3:40:58 (2017)

Male: Zach Gingerich 3:18:07 (2017)

Half Marathon:

With the only live half marathon participation being in 2019 and then the race being virtual in 2020, course records for this distance will be determined for 2022 with this race.

DROPS

Should you be asked to drop due to time constraints or you just feel your body wanting to stop 50K and Marathon runners can drop to the lower distance race with no time penalty. You will need to alert the timers of your drop at the finish. If you have a record breaking time on the distance you dropped to, you will unfortunately not be eligible for the cash prize but you will have your name in fame – here and in the race results posted to UltraSignup.

ANIMALS AND STROLLERS ON COURSE

Unfortunately, the course does have some crushed rock portions, actually over 6 miles of it; so strollers aren’t the best idea.

Also, race insurance doesn’t cover dogs on the course and we ask that you leave them at home.  Sorry folks, no dogs on course.  You will not be allowed to start if you have a dog with you.  You will not leave your dog in your car upon arrival and being told you can’t start with one.  SO LEAVE THE PUPS AT HOME WHERE IT IS WARM AND THEY ARE COMFORTABLE.

WEATHER

If weather is really nasty, I will have garbage bags for runners to help with rain and wind. Everyone should carry one water bottle and most of their fuel. There will be gels on course to help supplement but not to fuel everyone for their entire run. Weather is iffy this time of year – rain, sleet, snow or possibly sun, be prepared to have the best race.

**PLEASE, NO LITTERING ON THE COURSE. CARRY YOUR TRASH TO THE AID STATIONS AND DEPOSIT THERE.

SPONSOR – Hammer Nutrition

Once again we have been given the continued support from Hammer Nutrition.  They will be providing: ENDUROLYTES FIZZ® and  HAMMER GEL® for the start and aid locations, registrants will also receive these items in their bag at back pick-up

WAIVERS: You can pre print the waiver here to bring with you. There will be some available at check in.
